The trend away from 6-pin PCIe power and more towards the 8-pin PCIe power is driven mostly to simplify cable provisioning.
Gaming enthusiast cards have long exceeded 100W of power required and while PCIe slot power is available it is woefully inadequate.
Many cards like the HD 6970, GTX 690 and R9 Fury are 300W class cards which require dual 8-pin cables to be able to provide them with adequate current. The HD 7990 is so demanding it requires three 8-pin cables.
