The studio has accumulated numerous video cards from AMD and NVIDIA. There are several desktop machines which eventually are planned to be rack mounted so that they can be streamed via remote desktop.
The Zotac 8600 GT was destroyed by 196.75 with the fan profile set at 30% regardless of GPU temperature. Armies of cards were destroyed. NVIDIA had to pay out $200 million for laptop failures while desktop users had to fend for themselves.

The trend away from 6-pin PCIe power and more towards the 8-pin PCIe power is driven mostly to simplify cable provisioning. 8-pin cables can afford over 150W to minimize motherboard power needs.
Gaming enthusiast cards have long exceeded 100W of power required and while PCIe slot power is available it is woefully inadequate.
Many cards like the HD 6970, GTX 690 and R9 Fury are 300W class cards which require dual 8-pin cables to be able to provide them with adequate current. The HD 7990 is so demanding it requires three 8-pin cables.
