THE SPEC-01 RIG

The Corsair SPEC-01 is a basic low cost chassis for ATX motherboards. Additional fans are installed to improve the air flow. The front fan draws cool air in, and the rear/top fans remove warm air to eliminate residual heat. There is adequate room in the SPEC-01 for even 12″ video cards.

The Corsair power supplies have improved over time and the AX860i dominates 99% of machines out there. Most machines have 450W-600W power supplies which is fine for a single graphics card. A replacement PSU is planned primarily as the AX860i has problems with shutdowns.

The Ryzen R5 2400G has integrated graphics which is similar to the GT 1030 in performance. The R5 2400G has 4 cores and 8 threads which makes it comparatively powerful.

The R5 2400G is able to handle up to DDR4-2933 maximum. Depending on the RAM, the processor cannot always reach the top speeds. This seems to be a bug in the BIOS for setting up memory.

The MSI X470 Gaming Plus has abundant slots for peripherals. PCIe SATA cards can allow a machine to be loaded with storage. 4-port and 8-port SATA cards can be used to handle a vast number of hard disks.

A machine configured as a file server has the advantage of being on-line. The disadvantage is that ransomware tends to attack every machine on the network. Windows has been hardened to block ransomware but the risks are extant.

Windows can easily share hard disks galore over the LAN as storage volumes. These can be used directly or they can be mapped as network drives.

The SPEC-01 has room for 4 hard disks. At present perpendicular class hard disks are limited to about 16-20 TB before HAMR disks will be needed.
