The iPhone 12 and HomePod Mini are the main feature creatures that Apple introduced today. Apple started with the HomePod Mini which is $99 and focused on its ability when several are installed in a home.
Also there is no charger or headphones included with the iPhone 12, only a USB-C to lightning cable. iPad chargers are USB-A by design but Apple does sell high power USB-C chargers for their laptops.
The largest USB-C charger Apple sells is 96W which is enough to handle a range of mobile devices. Apple does offer more modest chargers for more modest prices.
Unfortunately there are no USB-C hubs as of yet in the marketplace. USB 4.0 will mandate USB-C connectors exclusively. USB 4.0 support will likely become available widely in 2021 as new computers come to the market. Legacy peripherals will easily be maintained as USB-C boxes to USB-A are inexpensive. USB-C memory sticks are already appearing in retail.
The Apple lineup now spans a wider range of pricing which will allow them to enter into a wider range of markets.
Recent iPhones now have adequate graphics capability to be able to play many games successfully. There are over 1.4 billion iPhones in use which represents a huge market for gaming.
The iPhone SE2 has 3GB RAM while the iPhone 12 has 4GB RAM. The iPhone 12 Pro now has 6GB RAM. The old iPhone 7 plus has 3GB of RAM which suggests iOS updates will continue for a few more years.
The iPhone 12 now supports 5G with channels below 6 GHz. NR2 channels above 24 GHz will likely be available in a few years depending on how long radio designs can be validated. 5G will mostly be of use in the dense urban areas such as Manhattan and Los Angeles etc.
Apple has made the $729 iPhone 12 mini smaller by removing Touch ID and replacing it with Face ID, alongside a significant reduction in bezels around the display. Apple claims it’s the smallest, thinnest, and lightest 5G phone in the world.
The camera on the iPhone 12 Pro is another 12 megapixel setup. 8K video (7680×4320) is now starting to emerge with mobile which needs at least 33 megapixels. The iPhone 12 Pro is able to handle 3840×2160 at up to 120 Hz.
Many phones are sold by carriers who finance the phones over typically 24 months. Restrictions on longer term contracts have been problematic for some less affluent consumers.
The HomePod Mini is a lower cost version of the original that is likely to be very popular. Like the original HomePod, the Mini will support stereo when 2 of them are in the same room.
For some reason Apple has deviated from their usual pricing for the iPhone. For some reason the prices expect the phone to be activated with Verizon. Immediately this is a problem internationally outside their service areas.
Turns out that Apple is tacking on $30 for a unlocked no contract phone. This is misleading about the true price. The iPhone 12 Pro is already expensive enough.
In the US, Verizon and AT&T are slugging it out with free iPhone 12 handsets so that they can lock in customers with multiyear contracts. So far T-Mobile has not posted anything but given the competition its likely they will make a move soon.
In Canada TELUS is first on social media with free iPhone 12 handsets. Bell is offered free phones with a device return to reduce costs. Rogers is still on pre-order.
Trade in iPhones are refurbished as there are some stores that sell refurbished phones and iPads at lower costs for those who want outright ownership.
