The old Apple Watch series 3 with 8GB of storage has been a nuisance for OS updates. Apple by default fills all available space with messages, photos and music. Given the watch is dependent on the iPhone this is not the best approach.
The series 3 watch is still functional and the battery is largely still good. The Apple Watch Series 6 Nike 44mm version is reviewed. It sells for $429.

The iPhone 6S or above is needed for the Apple Watch series 6. The iPhone 7 plus 128GB is still viable for a few more years. The more recent iPhone 11 still has the same 3GB of RAM.
Mostly the old Series 3 is used as a mobile payment device. It is fast and more secure than conventional cards, the watch also monitors activity rather extensively.
The series 6 watch is extremely feature rich. It can monitor heart rate, it can also provide simple electrocardiogram monitoring and now it also monitors blood oxygen. The series 6 watch can also detect a hard fall and call for help. The watch also knows the exact location and that will be sent to emergency services.
The new Apple Watch Series 6 Nike is a standard sports model intended for an outdoor active lifestyle. Nike has done well from the sporting good sector.
The basic Wi-Fi watch is all that is needed as mobile providers in Canada generally dislike eSIM devices. These also dislike data only cellular iPad et al. The phone is still needed for internet and app management so even with mobile support, the iPhone is needed.
The always on display tends to limit the charging interval. The always on display surfaced with Series 5 and now the Series 6 has a brighter display.
Blood oxygen monitoring is enabled through four clusters of red, green, and infrared LEDs along with four photodiodes on the back of the Apple Watch, all of which measure light reflected back from blood. A custom algorithm included in the new Blood Oxygen app measures blood oxygen between 70 and 100 percent. On-demand testing is available through the app, and the watch also occasionally takes background measurements when a person is inactive, including during sleep. Data is available in the Health app.
The sleep monitor is new and it is available for Series 3 and above which support WatchOS 7. Apple was slow to enter the sleep market but given the other features it makes perfect sense. Sleep monitoring is widely available with competitive watches which led to some criticism against Apple.
Apple Fitness+ is a new subscription service that is aimed at people who need a coach for getting into shape. Apple said more would made available later in the year when the app launches.
Case and band combinations can be made within collections (Apple Watch, Apple Watch Nike and Apple Watch Hermès) only.
A discrete bluetooth blood oxygen monitor is $50 so the Series 6 watch saves on the capital cost of a unit.
Fall detection sensors tend to cost upwards of $25 per month. The Series watch 6 handles this and saves on the recurring cost making the watch a natural choice for an older person,

Irregular rhythm notification requires the latest version of watchOS and iOS. It is not intended for use by people under 22 years old or those who have been previously diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation is a serious cardiac problem that usually requires ablation or open heart surgery.
