CES 2020: INTEL DG1

Intel was seen showing their 12th generation graphics hardware with a discrete card. The card, DG1, was showing Destiny 2 being played.

  • iDG1LPDEV
  • Gen. 12 Xe
  • 3x DisplayPort
  • HDMI
  • 96 pipelines
  • 768 shaders
  • dual slot cooling
  • 25W TDP

The card has roughly the performance of the GTX 1050 but it uses 1/3 the power. This suggests that if Intel was to bump up the number of pipelines it could still remain under the PCIe power limit and take a run at the GTX 1060.

The unit on exhibit at CES was a sample and Intel suggested some would be available for developers. Intel has miniport drivers so the hard part is done but supporting DX1 through DX12 is Microsoft’s job. Video card vendors also have additional packages for developers to make their job easier.

Here at the studio a new C++ project to show the basics of ray casting, sprites and overlays for a game. Even a simple game like Doom is a lot of work for developers.
